The Art

What is Zen Do Kai?

Zen Do Kai is Australia’s premier freestyle martial arts system, founded by Soke Bob Jones. The name translates roughly to “the best of everything in progression” — reflecting the system’s philosophy of drawing from multiple martial arts disciplines to create a practical, well-rounded approach to self-defence and personal development.

The system encompasses a 13-form curriculum that balances traditional forms (kata) with practical free fighting. Students develop skills across striking, grappling, weapons and self-defence, while building fitness, confidence and discipline.

Zen Do Kai is governed by the Bob Jones Martial Arts (BJMA), which maintains quality and standards across all affiliated dojos in Australia.

Our Story

Wolf Clan — Ranelagh

Wolf Clan opened its doors in 2020 at Ranelagh Soldiers Memorial Hall — a traditional Tasmanian community hall with polished timber floors and a vaulted ceiling — and has been building a tight-knit crew of martial artists ever since. From day one, the club has welcomed everyone: kids, adults, beginners and experienced fighters alike. Ages 8 to 80+, all training together, all supporting each other.

“Zen Do Kai combines the best techniques from a variety of martial arts. Our classes are inclusive, respectful and fun!”

Wolf Clan is affiliated with Bob Jones Martial Arts (BJMA). You can find us on the BJMA Club Directory.

The Teaching Team

Our Instructors

Experienced, qualified, and dedicated to helping every student reach their potential.

Renshi Mat Woolley

4th Dan Black Belt — Head Instructor & Founder

Renshi Mat founded Wolf Clan in 2020 and has built it into one of southern Tasmania’s most welcoming dojos. A 4th Dan Black Belt with decades of experience across multiple martial arts disciplines, Mat is as comfortable running a short-stick workshop as he is coaching a nervous beginner through their first class. He leads from the front — on the mat every Tuesday night — and sets the tone for a club that values strength, loyalty, commitment and compassion.

Sifu Jody

Sifu — Instructor

Sifu Jody is a key part of the Wolf Clan teaching team, regularly taking the lead on training sessions and helping students sharpen their technique. Patient and encouraging, Jody brings a calm, focused energy to every class and is always willing to spend extra time with students who want to get a move right.

Goru Eddie

Goru — Instructor

Goru Eddie brings real enthusiasm and hands-on experience to the mat. Whether it’s paired drills, kick-shield work or helping the kids class stay focused and having fun, Eddie is a reliable presence at training. His commitment to the club and his fellow students makes him a valued part of the Wolf Clan crew.

Sempai Adrian Wedd

1st Dan Black Belt — Assistant Instructor

Sempai Adrian supports training sessions and manages the club’s technology and operations. With a background in software engineering, Adrian ensures the club runs smoothly behind the scenes while continuing to develop his own martial arts practice.

What We Stand For

Club Values

Everything we do at Wolf Clan is guided by our commitment to our students and community.

Safe Instruction

Student safety is our highest priority. All training is conducted under qualified supervision with proper progression and protective equipment.

Self-Confidence

We build confidence through achievement. Every student progresses at their own pace, celebrating growth and earning rank through dedication.

Positive Community

Wolf Clan is a family. We support each other on and off the mat, building lasting friendships and mutual respect.

Confrontation Management

True martial arts begins with avoiding conflict. We teach de-escalation and awareness first, effective self-defence only when necessary.
